Over time these games coalesced into a subgenre called Soulslike (or Soulsborne), and Elden Ring is an evolution and continuation of those ideas. I’ve taken to describing Elden Ring to curious friends as a mashup between The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with its wide-open spaces and basic-in-theory combat, and the maddeningly obtuse logic of the ’90s CD-ROM game Myst.
